What is a domain name & registrar?

What is a domain?
Domain names are alphanumeric aliases that direct traffic to your hosting services. For example, when you type the domain authorbytes.com in to your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, etc.) you get the AuthorBytes website.

Domains can resolve to websites, email servers, and many other types of services. For the most part though, AuthorBytes clients use their domain to point to their author website and either email forwarding or a hosted email service.

What is a domain registrar?
A domain registrar is a company that reserves your domain name for an annual fee and points it to your hosting services via DNS (Domain Name Server.) Contrary to popular belief, you don't actually own a domain name, you rent it. The registrar holds that domain for you for a period of one or more years (up to 10 at a time) and points the domain to your DNS server.
